What is growth hormone?
Growth hormone is a natural chemical produced by the pituitary gland – a small collection of cells at the base of the brain.

Growth hormone is a ‘messenger’ produced at certain times in our lives to stimulate the growth of tissues throughout the body. Some of its effects are directly on growth while others are on other chemicals also involved in the growth process. It plays an essential role in the regulation of normal childhood growth. Growth hormone also has other important effects on how the body functions. It affects how the body deals with carbohydrates, fats and proteins, not just in childhood but throughout our lives.

What goes wrong in GHD?
Growth hormone deficiency can occur in a number of different ways, the most common reason being that the body does not produce enough growth hormone to stimulate growth in the usual way.

In as many as 50% of cases of GHD, the precise reason for the deficiency is not clear. Your paediatrician or endocrinologist will have used a combination of blood tests, your child’s growth charts and X-rays of your child’s skeleton and bones, to try to explain the poor growth of your child.
