With an MSc in Optoelectronics and Information processing, and a BSc in Pure and Applied Physics, some people may think it unusual that Brenda Cavanagh spends part of her time with a metal worker’s hammer in her hand. Not so Brenda.

“The current solutions to transmitting signals over long distances of fibre optic cable rely on repeaters to convert photons to electrical signals, amplify them and turn them back into photons again. Obviously a true optical amplifier would be far more elegant a solution; and that’s our ultimate aim. To achieve it though not only do I research and develop pilot units, but build them so they can be assessed, and that’s where the ‘metal bashing’ comes in!'.
